This is a most welcome gesture, given the long history of the English and Roman churches. Indeed, it was Pope Gregory the Great who sent St. Augustine of Canterbury in 595 as a missionary to England, thereby establishing the Anglican Rite. The Metropolitan, in an expression of his own personal relationship to the Holy See, joins the Holy Father in this blessed spirit of ecumenism and positive recognition of the historical brotherhood between Anglicans and Romans. This Metropolitan See, blessed with independence of jurisdiction, intends to continue and further the enlighted work of the Metropolitan's Apostolic Brother, the Roman Pontiff, as First Among Equals.
