Sacred Vessels on Ash Wednesday |
LENT 2010 |
Lent has begun. A time of great joy is now with
us; not in the sense of the Paschal joys we will be experiencing at
the end of Lent, but in the sense of the opportunity that we have in
this penitential season to look deep inside ourselves, get in touch
with who we are, and resolve for spiritual improvement, ever shunning
the ways of the world and embracing the ways of the Lord. Indeed, we
live in this world, but we are not of this world. We do not seek, as
Christians, the ways of this world, but rather we seek to follow the
path of Christ.
To enjoy the things of this world is not
inherently a sin, and indeed we are given the bounties of the earth
for our enjoyment and purposes, the chief of which is the purpose of
spiritual perfection. To be of the world, however, is to follow the
ways of the world simply as an end unto itself. During Lent, we
should strive both to shun the ways that are purely of this world and
to focus on the spiritual benefits that we are or should be receiving
from those things we encounter in the earth. |

A
Move for Christian Unity
Around
the Globe
In a historic
return to unity, the Holy Father took action towards the greater good
of the faithful to end the strife between the Roman and Anglican
Rites. This is a most welcome gesture, given the long history of the
English and Roman churches. Indeed, it was Pope Gregory the Great who
sent St. Augustine of Canterbury in 595 as a missionary to England,
thereby establishing the Anglican Rite. The Metropolitan, in an
expression of his own personal relationship to the Holy See, joins
the Holy Father in this blessed spirit of ecumenism and positive
recognition of the historical brotherhood between Anglicans and
Romans. This Metropolitan See, blessed with independence of
jurisdiction, intends to continue and further the enlighted work of
the Metropolitan's Apostolic Brother, the Roman Pontiff, as First
Among Equals. The dream of Christian unity and brotherhood of all
those in the Apostolic Faith has just been given new hope. |

HOW
TO SAY MASS
IN
THE ANGLICAN RITE
by
Archbishop
Rutherford Johnson, PhD

"What a
tremendous help this would have been 20 years ago when I was teaching
liturgics for St. George's Seminary and renovating an old Disciples
church for use at St. Gabriel's. For that matter, could have used it
50 years ago when I was acolyte warden for a large parish in
Oklahoma... I relied a lot on another source, but this has a lot of
the same info in an easier-to-decipher format!"

This book,
representing over a decade of work, was written with the intent of
providing a concise and complete resource for Anglo-Catholic clergy.
Grounded in the history and tradition of the liturgy of the Church,
How to Say Mass in the Anglican Rite contains hundreds of diagrams
and drawings. Included are detailed guides for low mass, high mass,
and sung mass, both celebrated by a priest and by a bishop. Also in
this book are guides for requiem masses, nuptial and ordination
masses, and the rites of Holy Week (all with diagrams). Notes on what
to do when celebrating without a server or when celebrating alone are
included. This book is written with the intent of helping all clergy
grow in their love of liturgy as a means of conveying spiritual truth
to the faithful and helping them grow in their spiritual journey.
